VIOLIN - VIOLA

The Stroh-Violin is a fascinating and visually striking instrument. Often crudely (and understandably) described as a "violin with a trumpet horn stuck on", it was invented in London in 1899 by Matthius Augustus Stroh (originally from Frankfurt). Its purpose was to enable string instruments to be heard in early days of recording, by means of mechanically amplifying the sound. Later into the 1920s as recording techniques advanced, its popularity declined and Strohviols are now somewhat rare. However, their sound and appearance are incredibly captivating, and they remain popular in theatre productions due to their striking and quirky stage presence. The sound is best described as like a violin but with a brassier edge, and with a very focused and directional projection.
